To enhance cricket pitches, the BCCI is now employing hybrid artificial grass. Five percent of practice pitches nationwide will feature hybrid artificial grass to ensure a lush green appearance across the entire field. The greatest benefit of using artificial grass in the running areas of the cricket field is that no patches will be visible on the field. This is especially advantageous for bowlers in the running areas. Arun Dhumal, the IPL chairman and HPCA director, stated that the BCCI organizes various cricket tournaments throughout the year. Consequently, five percent of the field will now feature hybrid artificial grass elements. Arun mentioned that hybrid pitches are being introduced in Dharamshala.
Players from around the world have praised the outfield at IPL matches. The chairman noted that Dharamshala experiences heavy rainfall, which significantly affects the pitches. However, the HPCA has also installed a saw air system, allowing water to be dried within 10 to 15 minutes after rain. According to him, the hybrid pitch will further enhance conditions in Dharamshala. After criticism of Dharamshala’s outfield during recent matches, players from test and IPL matches have appreciated the use of hybrid technology in the running areas.
To continuously improve cricket, the International Cricket Director of SAS and former English cricketer Paul Taylor also shared his efforts. He mentioned that England has already implemented hybrid pitches in many countries to enhance cricket. Taylor emphasized that no concrete is used to build hybrid pitches; instead, artificial grass is installed beneath the ground. He also mentioned that artificial grass is being used in areas where runners and wicketkeepers stand, providing a more uniform field and enhancing players’ performance.
Several countries are preparing pitches with artificial grass. In Dharamshala, four pitches for practice and running areas for bowlers have artificial grass installed. Additionally, four pitches in the practice net area have been equipped with hybrid technology using artificial grass. Artificial grass has been used to prepare pitches in cricket fields worldwide, including the majority of pitches in the UK. This marks the first time pitches have been set up in the Dharamshala Stadium in Himachal Pradesh, India. During this period, the IPL director showcased the quality of the pitches to the media and demonstrated shots while batting.
